Thanks For Giving Your Pennies

By Mary Jane Clark, Editor

Operation Round Up. Small Change That Changes Lives. My Mother often said, "I spend with a shovel, but seem to save with a spoon," to describe how difficult it was to get just a little bit ahead, saving for holidays, rainy days or just about anything. I marvel at how well she managed. When it came to giving she always used the shovel.

Her philosophy to save in small ways was part of a successful strategy. That same strategy works with Operation Round Up. The pennies you donate each month - just a "spoonful" of sorts - allow your volunteer Trustees to use a shovel. Do you ever miss the pennies? They mean a lot to the people they serve.

Most of us are pinching pennies these days, and have more places to spend them than we can count. We at Cuivre River thank you from the bottom of our hearts for sending a few to Operation Round Up when you pay your monthly bill.

Here's how they went out by the shovel, $18,300 in grants to families and organizations and $18,000 in scholarship grants to 36 undergraduate students, during the last Trustees' meeting.

Scholarships of $500 each were awarded to one Pike County student, nine Lincoln County students, six Warren County students and 20 St. Charles County students. Recipients are named inside the front cover.

Families received $10,300 in assistance for weatherization, medical bills, therapy, home wheelchair access and children’s health.

Organizations received $8,000. First Step Back Home received $5,000 for its homeless ministry. The Wentzville School District’s robotics enthusiasts Ratchet Rockers Robotics club and the Wright City High School robotics program each received $1,000 to support their team programs and competitions. The Moscow Mills Community Food Pantry received $1,000 to purchase food.

The 267 families and organizations you've already helped this year say "Thank You!" and so do I. Happy New Year!
